Why fix a chip right away
A chip is a weak spot. Bothell weather keeps working on it: rain gets into the break, cold mornings and a hot defroster make the glass expand and contract, and potholes and road vibration push on it every day. That is how a chip the size of a pea turns into a crack across the windshield, and a repair becomes a replacement.
Damage that can usually be repaired
- Star breaks: a small impact point with short cracks running out from it.
- Bullseyes and half-moons: round, cone-shaped breaks in the outer layer of glass.
- Combination breaks: a bullseye with short legs coming off it.
- Short cracks: some short cracks can be repaired if they are caught early.
Long cracks, damage at the edge of the glass and chips right in the driver’s view usually call for a windshield replacement instead. We will tell you honestly which one your glass needs.
How resin repair works
The break is cleaned out, then a clear resin is worked into it to fill the gaps. Once the resin is cured hard, the surface is finished smooth. A good repair helps keep the chip from spreading and makes it much harder to see. Most repairs fade to a faint mark rather than disappearing completely.
Until we can fix it
- Put a piece of clear tape over the chip to keep out water and dirt.
- Avoid blasting the defroster on full heat against a cold windshield.
- Skip the car wash and close the doors gently.
- Call (425) 406-4691 sooner rather than later.
